Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame
Election Criteria and Guidelines for Dogs and Persons

The Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame (BFTHF) is one of five breed organizations that are part of the Bird Dog Foundation of Grand Junction TN. The breed organizations are the Pointer/Setters, Retrievers, Springer Spaniels, German Shorthaired Pointers, and the Brittany. “The BDF is dedicated to preserving the past and protecting the future for bird dogs including pointers, spaniels, & retrievers most of which are involved in competitive field trial sports across the continent. The foundation houses and operates the National Bird Dog Museum, Field Trial Hall of Fame, & Wildlife Heritage Center all under one roof at Grand Junction, TN.”

BFTHF Nomination Committee:

Induction of an Outstanding Brittany and a Distinguished Brittany Person into the BFTHF is a three step process. First a dog or person must be NOMINATED. Second, the dogs and persons with the top nominations must be ELECTED by the Election Committee, and finally (or third) the elected dog and person will be FORMALLY INDUCTED into the Field Trial Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, TN.

The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to nominate Outstanding Brittanys and Distinguished Brittany people (i.e., those who have made an outstanding contributions to the sport of field trialing) and thus to make them eligible for subsequent election into the BFTHF. The number of nominations a dog or person receives is an indication of the number of people who believe that dog or person should be in the BFTHF! The Election Committee looks at the dogs and people that have received the most nominations!

The Nominating Committee is an ad hoc committee that exists each year. Membership is voluntary and all Brittany people who nominate worthy Brittany dogs or people to the BFTHF are MEMBERs. We ask everyone to participate. The only reward is the knowledge that your effort will help a dog or person get elected to the BFTHF. Send your nominations to the BFTHF Chairman – Rick Smith.

The most satisfactory method of obtaining nominations is to have interested persons at field trials events collecting nominations from concerned trialers. The objective is to obtain input from a wide variety of people. Persons doing this should provide a petition stating that the petitioners believe this dog/person has made outstanding contributions to the sport of Field Trialing. Petitions are an easy way to get interested people involved, and it is the most practical way to obtain the 100 + nominations needed to meet the minimum requirement for every individual nominated. The individual soliciting nominations is critical to this process.

Normally, no more than two worthy persons and dogs will be elected in any calendar year. The nomination step will be complete by October 15 of each year.

Basic Criteria

Dogs and persons to be considered should have made and should be known for the significant contributions that have been made to the sport of field trialing.

The Hall of Fame honors dogs that are special and a tribute to their breed. These dogs should be ones that breeders look to when planning breedings. Viable candidates should have multiple hour wins in important championships and should have produced pups that are also multiple hour winners.

Dogs:
1. Factors to be considered are
a. a candidate’s field trial record, i.e., performance (one hour heats or longer),
b. production, a candidates progeny and their quality, and
c. recognition that the candidate has received from the field trial community.

2. A dogs candidacy depends upon the dog’s entire competitive career and particular win or performance should not over shadow an entire career.(History has shown that winning a championship or even a National Championship, does not necessarily make a dog an eligible nominee.)

3. Dogs must be deceased for at least a year to be considered.

Persons:
People who are deserving of consideration for nomination and election into the BFTHF should have rendered exemplary service to the sport of field trialing both locally and nationally for a long period of time. Notable service to the sport of field trialing has been defined to be any combination of the following activities: judge, club official, owner, breeder, handler, and patron. These activities may be further expanded to include the following:

Candidates should be nominated based on the contributions they have made, what they have given to the game, not what they have received. BFTHF nominees should be givers to the sport, not takers or self promoter.

1. Having been a field trailer for a long time.
2. Having been a hunter, a hunting dog trainer, thereby gaining some insight into understanding the nature
3. of game birds, their habits and the ability of dogs to locate and handle those game birds under varying conditions.
4. Having bred, owned, trained, handled, and campaigned field trial dogs that became winners.
5. Having supported and promoted amateur competition and professional dog handlers, in other words a real patron of the field trial sport.
6. Having served as an official of a major or national club or association such as AFTCA.
7. Having been a field trial marshal, a stakes manager, a trial chairman of major stakes.
8. Having judged major stakes; having been a reporter of major stakes.
9. Having been an important contributor financially to major field trial activities, i.e., Bird Dog Foundation, regional or associated field trial grounds, the AFTCA, or upland game habitat improvement programs.
10. Having been a generous supporter of other environmental or conservation activities that significantly enhance field trials and field trial venues.
11. Having served as a member of a top dog award or handler award program.
12. Having been a writer and/or journalist associated with field trials and bird dogs.
13. Having been a leading competitor and winner of major stakes
14. Above all, nominees should have exercised superior sportsmanship in all aspects of field trial sport.

BFTHF Election Committee:

The purpose of the Election Committee is to elect to the BFTHF Outstanding Brittanys and Distinguished Brittany people that have been nominated by the Nomination Committee. The Election Committee is charged with electing Brittanys and Brittany owners that the elector believes are worthy, i.e., those who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport of field trialing, and whose stature is comparable to the previously elected dogs and people

The Election Committee performs a significant task and only the best and the most knowledgeable field trial Ch’ship people will be asked to participate in its activities. It is only natural that these people be drawn from the ranks of people actively engaged with Ch’ship field trials! (The American Field has a recommendation that a person should have been involved in trials for upwards of 10 years.)

The current plan is to have an Election Committee consisting of a minimum of 30 persons. The Election Committee will be drawn from the following sources:

1. BFTHF Board of Directors
2. People instrumental in the conduct of Brittany Open Ch’ships.
a. The Brittany Major Ch’ship stakes, i.e., The US Open Ch’ship and the
Deep South Free-For All Ch’ship.
b. Individuals identified with the Open All-Age Ch’ships that have been in
existence for a minimum of 5 years and, have built a reputation for the quality of
their Ch’ship.
3. Additional people will be drawn from a list of suitable people including Reporters and
Ch’ship Judges.
4. Individuals vote, Clubs are not represented in this activity.

To be elected a Brittany and/or a Brittany person must receive 60% of the votes from the Election Committee membership. For example, if there are 100 people on the Election Committee and all of them vote, 60 votes
for each dog or person are required for election. However, if only 90 vote, 60 must vote for a dog or a person
in order to elect that dog or person to the BFTHF.

Please note! It is critical that all election committee members vote!
